In order to promote access for as many people as possible to the works of its operatic and choreographic heritage, the Paris Opera, in keeping with its public service mission, supports the free performance during the summer of an operatic or choreographic work recorded in its theatres, the Palais Garnier or the Opéra Bastille, in the open air or in a suitable heritage site.
This is the purpose of the "Opéra d'été" event, launched in 2013, to which the Paris Opera is particularly committed.
Director: Laurent Pelly
Laurent Pelly takes on this pinnacle of bel canto with his characteristic verve. Setting the work during the 1914 war rather than the Napoleonic Wars and adapting the dialogue, the director modernises the piece without sacrificing a single ounce of its brio.
Director: Robert Wilson
The references to Asia could not fail to appeal to Robert Wilson, whose aesthetic draws on Japanese Noh theatre. His sparse staging, interspersed with touches of commedia dell'arte, offers striking and hypnotic images.
Bet it in the farmyard or the cornfield, the hearts of Lise and Colas search for and eventually find each other. In the manner of a musical, the original script, reworked by Ashton, carries us away with its whimsy and smiles
In the end it is Don Quixote who delivers the happy ending after battling windmills and crossing paths with Cupid, Dulcinea and the Queen of the Dryads. The costumes and colourful sets sublimate a vivacious and entertaining work.
