A unique artist residency in the heart of the Palais Garnier

PROJECT 12

12 Months – 12 Artists – 12 Artworks

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Palais Garnier in 2025, the Paris Opera and Arop (Friends of the Paris Opera) are launching an unprecedented program, PROJECT 12: a unique artist residency in the heart of the iconic Parisian landmark.

Throughout the year, one artist will be welcomed each month to the Palais Garnier, a true temple of artistic creation. This initiative echoes the visionary spirit of Charles Garnier, who, during the construction of the Opera House, brought together the greatest artists of his time—painters, sculptors, and artisans of the Second Empire—to enhance this architectural masterpiece.

Fully immersed in the life of the Paris Opera, contemporary artists will have the rare opportunity to draw inspiration from its daily rhythms, attend rehearsals, and engage with the dancers, singers, musicians, and craftspeople who keep this emblematic institution alive.

During their residency, each artist will create an exclusive piece inspired by their experience and the unique atmosphere of the Palais Garnier, much like their 19th-century predecessors, who drew from Garnier's lines and volumes to shape their works. These creations, a dialogue between past and present, will be auctioned in early 2026, enabling art patrons to support contemporary creation while contributing to the Paris Opera’s influence and perpetuating the artistic tradition that shaped this legendary venue.

The name of each resident artist will be announced at the beginning of each month.

The selection of these creators was made through a dialogue between the artists themselves, the galleries representing them, and the teams at the Paris Opera and Arop, with the shared aim of honoring and renewing the visionary excellence cherished by Charles Garnier.

Petrit Halilaj

Petrit Halilaj

Showcased at the Mennour gallery, he is the second artist to exhibit at the Palais Garnier as part of "PROJECT 12": Kosovar artist Petrit Halilaj draws inspiration for his work from the recent history of his homeland and his own personal journey.

His ambitious creations—ranging from sculpture, drawing, and painting to text and performance—serve as vessels for memory.

Through immersive installations that weave intricate narratives, he explores the interconnectedness of humans, plants, and animals. His art carves out a space for freedom, desire, intimacy, and identity—a realm of resilience and resistance where personal and collective histories can be reshaped.

Dhewadi Hadjab

Dhewadi Hadjab

Showcased at the Mennour gallery, he is the first artist to exhibit at the Palais Garnier as part of "PROJECT 12": photography and painting are central to his practice.

Imbued with a sense of strangeness, his hyperrealistic canvases portray a deliberate imbalance, a pause in time, and bodies captured in motion through the precision of the brush.

With remarkable sculptural intensity, these works invite us to transcend the tangible and embrace the fragility of uncertainty.
