Christel Loetzsch Mezzo-soprano

Biography

Christel Loetzsch studied voice in Weimar, Milan and Leipzig. From 2012 to 2014 she was a member of the Young Artists Programme at the Semperoper Dresden. In 2012 she made her debut at the Arena di Verona as Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and in 2013 at the San Francisco Opera as Dorabella (Così fan tutte). From 2015 to 2018 she was first mezzo-soprano of the Thüringer Philharmonie, with whom she made numerous debuts, including Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Leokadja Begbick (The Grandeur and Decadence of the City of Mahagonny) and Maddalena (Rigoletto).

In 2019, she makes her debut at La Monnaie in Brussels in Dusapin's Macbeth Underworld and sings Fricka (Rhine Gold and Valkyrie) at the Landestheater in Niederbayern. In November 2020, she sang the title role in Dusapin's Penthesilea at the Philharmonie de Paris as part of the Festival d'Automne à Paris, followed by Boulez's Le Soleil des eaux with the Orchestre de Paris. Since then she has sung Nourrice (La Femme sans ombre) at the Frankfurt Opera, Schönberg's Pierrot lunaire with the Dresden Philharmonic, the Tambour (Ullmann's L'Empereur d'Atlantis) with the Munich Radio Orchestra, Flosshilde (L'Or du Rhin, Le Crépuscule des dieux) and Schwertleite (La Walkyrie) with the Dresden Philharmonic, Schwertleite at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples and the Young Dante (Il Viaggio, Dante) at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence.

Last season she made her debut at the Lausitz Festival in Boesmans' Julie with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, and appeared at La Monnaie in Brussels in Romeo Castellucci's new production of The Ring as Flosshilde (Rhinegold) and Rossweisse (Valkyrie). In the 2024-2025 season, her roles include Herodias (Salome) in Weimar, Flosshilde (Twilight of the Gods) at La Monnaie in Brussels, Judith (Bluebeard's Castle) at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl and L'Empereur d'Atlantis at the Philharmonie de Paris.
