Gesine Völlm has worked primarily as a costume designer since 1998 and has been voted Costume Designer of the Year in Germany three times by an international jury of critics. She has worked on major theatre, dance and opera productions in numerous European and German-speaking theatres. Her international opera career began in 2008 with Parsifal in Bayreuth under the direction of Stefan Herheim.
Her collaboration with Claus Guth began in 2019 with Jenůfa at London's Royal Opera House. The production won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Opera Production in 2022. After Il Viaggio, Dante at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence in 2022, she was responsible for the costumes for Sémélé at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in 2023, also directed by Claus Guth.
