After studying at the Copenhagen Opera Academy, Swedish dramatic baritone John Lundgren joined the Royal Danish Opera, where he made his debut as Schaunard (La Bohème). His repertoire includes major roles such as Paolo (Simon Boccanegra), the title role in Wozzeck, Conte di Luna (Le Trouvère) and Giorgio Germont (La Traviata). He regularly sings the great Wagnerian roles such as the Dutchman (The Flying Dutchman), Wotan (The Ring) and Telramund (Lohengrin). He is also known for his interpretation of darker characters such as Scarpia (Tosca), Pizarro (Fidelio) and the title role in Bluebeard's Castle. John Lundgren is a regular guest at opera houses in London, Berlin, Stockholm, Zurich, Geneva, Dresden, Hamburg, Leipzig, Amsterdam, Gothenburg, Oslo, Beijing and Tokyo, as well as at the Bregenz and Bayreuth Festivals
His roles have included Jochanaan (Salome), Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Alberich and Wotan (The Ring), Kurwenal (Tristan and Isolde), Amfortas (Parsifal), Barak (The Woman Without a Shadow) and the title role in Nabucco, working with conductors such as Thielemann, Soustrot, Morandi, Adam Fischer, Petrenko and Boder and directors such as Warner, Loy, Dresen, Radok and Castorf. In 2006 John Lundgren was awarded the Birgit Nilsson Fellowship. In 2010, he was appointed 'Ridder af Dannebrogordenen' (Knight of the Order of Dannebrog) by Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark, and in 2021, he will be appointed court singer by His Majesty the King of Sweden.
