After a career on the world's great opera stages in roles such as Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute), Lucia di Lammermoor, Lakmé, Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), Ophelia (Hamlet), Manon, Violetta Valery (La Traviata), Marie (La Fille du Régiment) and Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande), Natalie Dessay decided to concentrate on recitals, theatre and song. Meeting Michel Legrand confirmed her choice. There followed a tour of Europe and America, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg at the Théâtre du Châtelet and the albums 'Entre Elle et Lui' and 'Beetwen Yesterday and Tomorrow'.
She was invited by the Théâtre du Châtelet to perform in Sondheim's musical Passion. At the same time, she continued her recital career in a duo with the pianist Philippe Cassard. They recorded the albums 'Debussy, Fiançailles pour rire' and 'Schubert'. Natalie Dessay was the first French opera singer to be appointed a Kammersängerin at the Vienna State Opera. The theatre is now a very important part of her artistic life. She made her debut in Und in Tours and then in Paris.
In 2018, she appeared at the Festival d'Avignon in Certaines n'avaient jamais vu la mer and in La Légende d'une vie at the Théâtre Montparnasse. More recently, she appeared in Hilda at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg and as Tognina (L'Impressario de Smyrne) on tour in France. Future projects include Rose (Gypsy) at the Opéra de Lorraine and Mrs Lovett (Sweeny Todd) at the Opéra national du Rhin.
At the Opéra national de Paris: Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Olympia), 1992, 2000; Alcina (Morgana), 1999; The Magic Flute (Queen of the Night), 1999, 2000; Les Indes galantes (Fatime, Hébé, Zima), 1999; Ariane à Naxos (Zerbinetta), 2003; Lucia di Lammermoor (title role), 2006 ; La Bohème (Musetta), 2009 ; La Somnambule (Amina), 2010 ; Giulio Cesare (Cleopatra), 2011 ; Manon (title role), 2012 ; La Fille du Régiment (Marie), 2012 ; recital with Philippe Cassard, 2015
