Biography

Bass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee won first prize in the Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition, the Zarzuela Prize in the Operalia Competition and the Grand Prize in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

In recent seasons his roles have included Hans Sachs (The Master Singers of Nuremberg), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Amonasro (Aida), Jochanaan (Salome) and Escamillo (Carmen) with the Frankfurt Opera Ensemble and Wotan (Rhine Gold) with Dallas Opera, Grandier (Les Diables de Loudun) and Caspar (Le Franc-tireur) at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Dutchman (The Flying Dutchman) and Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) at the Santa Fe Opera, Jochanaan, Kreon (Œdipus Rex), the messenger of the spirits (Die Frau ohne Schatten), the title role in the title role in King Roger, the Count of Monterone (Rigoletto) and the title role in Bluebeard's Castle at the Frankfurt Opera, Colline (La Bohème) at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Enrico (Anna Bolena) at the Vienna State Opera, Paolo (Simon Boccanegra) at the Opernhaus Zürich, Mephistopheles (Faust) at the Irish National Opera, Jochanaan at the Rome Opera, Don Pizarro (Fidelio) at the Amsterdam State Opera and Donner (Rheingold) at the Bayreuth Festival.

In the 2024-2025 season, his roles include Wotan (Rheingold) at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Leipzig Opera, the title role in Macbeth, Amfortas (Parsifal) and Amonasro at the Frankfurt Opera, the Dutchman at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, and Donner at the Bayreuth Festival. In concert, he made his debut at the Cēsis Art Festival as Amfortas in a concert version and with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in a mixed programme with Emmanuel Villaume.
