Born in Lucerne, director and artist Sarah Derendinger has been exploring the intersection between experimental cinema and multimedia installations since the 1990s. She is one of the first artists to express herself through video art and has created numerous experimental films before specializing in complex video installations, often multi-channel, incorporating live cameras.
Her works have been presented internationally, notably at renowned festivals and in theaters and opera houses such as the Theatertreffen in Berlin, the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, the English National Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and La Monnaie in Brussels.
Since 2013, she has collaborated regularly with director Calixto Bieito and has designed video installations for artists such as Jossi Wieler, Heiner Goebbels, Barbora Horáková Joly, and Andrea Moses. In 2017, she received the Spanish Critics’ Award for Best Video Design for Obabakoak.
In parallel, Sarah Derendinger has built a successful career as a filmmaker. Her documentaries and experimental films, such as Familientreffen (Swiss Cinema Award, Visions du Réel 2009), have been screened at many international festivals.
Since 1993, she has directed documentaries, live broadcasts, and series for Swiss television SRF, also contributing to the creation of new formats for documentary series and fiction as a program developer and director.
More recently, she has also directed video operas, including Arne Nordheim’s Tempest (Bergen Festival, 2021) and The Rape of Lucretia (Théâtre de Lucerne, 2023), integrating her artistic approach to video art into stage productions.
At the Paris Opera: Lear (2016), Simon Boccanegra (2018).
