Australian conductor Simone Young has led the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 2022. From 2005 to 2015 she was Artistic Director of the Hamburg State Opera and Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic. She was also Principal Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1998 to 2002 and Artistic Director of Opera Australia from 2001 to 2003.
Considered a specialist in the operas of Wagner and Strauss, she has appeared on the world's major stages, including the Vienna State Opera, Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden (where she conducted the complete Ring cycle), Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper and New York's Metropolitan Opera. During her tenure in Hamburg, she has conducted numerous world premieres of contemporary music and an extensive operatic repertoire (Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Strauss, Hindemith, Britten, Henze).
She has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Orchestre national de France, Orquesta nacional de España, Orchestre de la Suisse romande, Philharmonia Zurich and Orchestre national de Lyon. In the 2024-2025 season, she will conduct Kurtág's Fin de partie at the Vienna Staatsoper, L'Or du Rhin and La Walkyrie at La Scala in a new production by David McVicar, Salomé at the Zurich Opera, and Elektra at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin.
In the summers of 2024 and 2025, she will make her debut at the Bayreuth Festival conducting the Ring cycle. Simone Young has received numerous awards, including membership in the Order of Australia, Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France, and Honorary Membership of the Vienna State Opera. Numerous CD and DVD recordings attest to his career.
