Biography
Frédéric Boyer, born in 1961, is a writer, poet, editor and translator. He has written around forty books in various genres: novels (he won the Livre Inter prize in 1993 for Des choses idiotes et douces, P.O.L), essays, poems, plays and translations. His work combines personal writing with the rereading and translation of great old texts. He directed a new translation of the Bible (Bayard, 2001) with specialists in biblical languages and texts and contemporary writers. He has also retranslated the Confessions of Saint Augustine under the title Les Aveux (P.O.L, 2008, winner of the Prix Jules Janin de l'Académie française), the Kâmasûtra (P.O.L, 2015), Shakespeare (Richard II and the Sonnets, P.O.L, 2010) and the Song of Roland (Rappeler Roland, P.O.L, 2013).
In spring 2019, he will publish Le Souci de la terre, a new translation of Virgil's Géorgiques (Gallimard, Bernard Hoffner translation prize). With composer Pascal Dusapin, he also wrote the librettos for his operas Macbeth Underworld (2019) and Il Viaggio, Dante (2023). With composer Arthur Lavandier, he wrote Poèmes spirites, six melodies for mezzo-soprano and orchestra (2019), and the libretto for the opera Abrégé des merveilles de Marco Polo (2022). His most recent books are Si petite (Gallimard, 2024) and Évangiles, nouvelle traduction (Gallimard, 2023). In addition to his work as an author, Frédéric Boyer is the director of the P.O.L. publishing house.
